RunRideRow team makes a splash for Marlow charity

RunRideRow 2014, a team of eight people prepared to run, ride and row for a good cause, has raised almost £20,000 for children with special needs.  Alun Saunders, Project Manager at NetDespatch, was part of the team who braved the rain, storms and rugged countryside to finish the gruelling 780 mile expedition from John O’Groats to Marlow in Buckinghamshire.  The money was raised for Marlow Opportunity Playgroup, a Wooburn based charity.   Having trained for nine months before the challenge, the team set off from Scotland, cycling and running for three days and nights on the 690-mile leg of the journey to Lechlade in Gloucestershire. From Lechlade, they rowed the final 90 miles, passing through 29 locks, alternating shifts in a coxed four-man boat. The team finally arrived at Marlow Bridge five days later.   “It was a great experience for a great cause” says Alun Saunders. “The charity does so much for so many people; it was something towards which we are proud to be able to contribute. There are so many experiences and moments to remember, but I have to say that cycling through the Highlands at night is something I will never forget.”   Every single penny raised by the team went to the Marlow Opportunity Playgroup. None of the funds raised were used to offset the cost of running the event.

Marlow Opportunity Playgroup is the only special needs nursery in south Buckinghamshire, and needs local support to help meet the £35,000 a year it needs to continue to offer a secure, relaxed and happy environment where pre-school children with both physical & non-physical special needs can learn through structured play and exploration.
